Why was our Resource Center created?
How did our Resource Center come to be? Like most things it was a process of hard times that led to growth. We have set up each of the pages as an offering for everyone who loves children. Welcome and please enjoy, we hope you will return often to see updates.
From the moment they met on a blind date more than 45 years ago, Dr. Jim and Sonnie McFarland felt that they met for a reason. They did not want to have limits on their chance to learn and to growth. The young couple needed to share their love and wisdom with the world.
It was never supposed to be easy! They faced the same hard stuff as parents and educators that many reading this have in common; grumpy kids, school stress, social pressures, economic struggles etc. Through all that life brings the wisdom of Dr. Montessori and other teachers helped them get through it and thrive.
Over the decades they raised a family, taught in classroom, lecture hall and workshop settings. Jim became “Dr. Jim”, while touching the lives of so many in groups that he led. Sonnie was been recognized by the American Montessori Society as The Living Legacy, in 2011, for her contributions to Montessori Education. She is founding member of the Peace Committee for AMS.
The McFarland’s have studied, practiced and taught parents how to:
- Bring Montessori into the home
- Stay positive in the face of acting out
- Be calm and confident
- See the true child
- Let kids be their own boss
- Be a model of love
- Set up the home so that kids are happy and safe

Dr. Maria Montessori taught us that the lone hope for a world that is full of peace is one in which the children are allowed to be who they are and not be taught to handle issues with force.
Someday it will not be called “Montessori Education”, it’ll just be called ‘Education’!
